Lesson #6
Lesson #6 is about “sharing the data.” Robert McNamara commissioned several studies aimed at getting information on everything from buyer demographics for certain vehicles to accident reports to make cars safer. After gathering all the information he needed, he used it to design cars that led to a major success. Henry Ford gave McNamara the job as president of Ford. He was the first person that was not a member of the Ford family to hold the position. A couple months later he quit his position after being nominated to the Security of Defense. McNamara talks to John F. Kennedy about taking out all U.S. advisors in Vietnam within two years. Then they discuss the coup in South Vietnam that saw its president murdered, which made it tough for the U.S. to pull out. The U.S. was kind of responsible for the coup. McNamara believes that if escalation is needed to improve the deteriorating condition, the American people needed to be educated on the dire circumstances of that country.
Lesson #6 could relate to ISIS’s brutal beheading of 22 Syrian captives because the US is watching the video several times to find out the identity of these hostages and their killers. So far they have found some information. They think the video would’ve cost $200,000 to produce, according to TRAC (Terrorism Research & Analysis Consortium). Nearly all the killers are unmasked and are clearly identifiable. There are 22 ISIS fighters of varying ethnicities and nationalities, all wearing the same camouflage uniforms. They are led by the militant known to the British press as "Jihadi John," the masked fighter with a British accent responsible for the killing of western hostages. Only one of the killers has been identified: Maxime Hauchard. The lighting and shadows reveal that it was recorded for four to six hours. The US has also discovered that two people had clip-on microphones and since you cannot hear them talk in the video, they think it will be released in the future. Three of the killers were cropped out of the video. This includes a fighter in a balaclava, the only other masked other than “Jihadi John.” TRAC believes the second masked militant may have been the acting as a body double for “Jihadi John,” someone who acts as a decoy in case of an airstrike.
